> youth.arm* objectives & benefits

- To establish a Youth Theatre Group that produces quality, international standard theatre.

- To provide free or subsidised training to youth practitioners, conducted by experienced theatre practitioners.

- To encourage and create more original, contemporary Malaysian theatre.

- to provide more avenues and practical opportunities for youth practitioners in the industry.

- To ensure that there will be constant and progressive theatre created in Malaysia, as well as healthy growth in industry, by way of local veterans training interested youths in creative and technical aspects of theatre.

- To provide a stepping-stone for Malaysian youth theatre practitioners to enter and compete at Regional & International Theatre Festivals.

> format

+ structure

repertory styled, planned season, lasting no longer than nine months (excluding application period), maximum of two productions.

+ age criteria

16 – 23 years old for new applicants; age limit for membership is 25 years of age.

+ Membership

Membership is by audition (Actors) or interview (Crew/Directors/Playwrights) only and is only granted upon successful audition/interview and subject to payment of a nominal membership fee of rm50.00 only**.

A selection of non-successful applicants (Actors & Crew only), decided on merit, may be placed on a reserve list, to be invited into the program if vacancy or opportunity arise.

membership is for a singular season only. only malaysian citizens or malaysian permanent residents may qualify for membership.

Past members (performers) must re-audition for new seasons, but will not be required to undergo training, whilst past Directors, Playwrights or Crew may be re-invited to join new seasons without interview, nor additional training, subject to payment of membership fee.

+ training & placements

all trainees will be required to undergo (free or subsidised) training conducted by appointed mentors and/or Facilitators. trainees will also have ample opportunites for industrial placements by local performing arts groups or companies.

+ remuneration

All members will be not be waged by victorian theatre company but may derive stipends or payment from contracted work or industrial placements done.

+ TRAINING & industrial placements

training will be subsidised in whole or in part by the Executive Producers and conducted by appointed facilitators, in areas ranging from acting, directing, scripting and technical matters. it will be spread out throughout the first 6 months of the season, schedule to be determined at a later date.

performers will undergo a minimum of 6 hours of masterclasses on theories and 10 hours of acting, movement, improvisation, breathing, voice etc techniques.

the Crew will undergo a minimum of 6 hours of masterclasses on production matters and technical expertise and 24 hours of industrial placements to accumulate practical experience.

the Director will undergo a minimum of 10 hours of training on directing theory and skills. the Playwright will undergo a minimum of 10 hours of consultation to improve on the proposed script.

Upon completion of training, all members will be assigned to work towards the season's targeted production, under the supervision of the appointed Artistic Director and Producer.

+ executive producer(s)

The Executive Producer(s) is(are) Victorian theatre company and any other appointed programme partners.

+ appointments of mentors & facilitators

The Executive Producer(s) will try its utmost to confirm appointed mentors and Facilitators by the start of the season but reserves the right to have it as a continuing effort throughout the first six months of the season. an artistic director will be appointed by the sixth month of the season.

at press time, negotiations are positively underway but no names have been confirmed as yet.

+ funding & logistics

The Executive Producer(s) will be responsible for all finances throughout the season, as well as being in charge of general logistics, supported by the youth.arm members.

Logistics for the entire season’s production(s), i.e. venue rental, marketing, sponsorships etc. will be the responsibility of the youth.arm members, supervised by the Executive Producers.

+ criteria

Writing candidates must submit a good selection of original writings (prose, poetry or reviews accepted) when applying for an interview.

Directing candidates are encouraged to submit a working production proposal when applying for an interview (not compulsory).

performing candidates must have two or more constrasting monologues prepared (between 1-3 minutes each) when applying for an audition.

Crew candidates are encouraged to prepare a short written opinion on what the position applied for is all about (not compulsory).

candidates will be auditioned/interviewed without prejudice of race, gender and/or orientation. good command of both the english and malay languages, both written and spoken, is a must. experience is a plus but not a necessity.

+ application fee

a nominal audition/interview fee of rm5.00 only per application will be levied**. payment is to be made in cash before your audition/interview.

+ performance/production target: shorts iii

we are gearing the 04-05 season of youth.arm* towards the staging of a workshop performance of shorts iii , the third installment of a franchise first concepted by chaotic harmony theatre. this may be followed by a public performance of the same if the appointed artistic director and producer deems it fit to do so. the performance(s) will be held in the final three months of the season.

shorts iii will be a collective effort by the members of youth.arm* featuring 2 - 4 short monologues, dialogues or one act plays, at least one of which must be an original piece by the trainee playwright. It will be performed by the trainee performers of youth.arm, co-directed by the trainee director and co-produced by the trainee producer.
