Hey kids... right-o. Just a reminder that you're assignment of the week is to spew out ideas for your production. Since we've tentatively decided to run another 'Shorts', the more ideas, the better! Don't forget u're to blog the ideas. Just keep in mind that it has got to have something to do with being Malaysian, Malaysia n such.

So that's your mission of the week. Go to it ppl!

IMPORTANT NOTE: from a fading presence

Hi there,

Paik yin, please permit me to send this to everyone as well. I am in short of time in preparing stuff for ya’s for term 2. So sorry to do this, but I think there's nothing in this letter that I wont say to everyone else.

Good luck for exams and thanks for the greetings. We aren’t that keen on you missing so many classes. There’s so much u should know before going into term 3. But since u had things to do, I believe you must make up for it, if you still interested.

I do have a suggestion: when your exams are done, pls make call victor and in a short time, like let's say a week, pls catch up with us. See victor and let him brief you in totally brief the crash course of what we learned. At the same time, pls see other performers and check with them too. Call them and make appointments. I want alia to do this as well. Because everyone must know these essential things before term 2. Maybe Vic will give homework or not, i'm not sure...it's up to him. But I stressed this completely. Please get this done.

I will check on this. And like to press on this matter. Square is not happy that the attendance is poor. But since we also understand that u must study and alia must work, I would like to help you help yourselves to be at par with those who made effort. Michael will do this as well as soon as he finishes his exams in May. A short crash course I might call it.

In addition, since u are a real busy gal, just like the rest of us, pls email me your schedules till the end of august. I need this so I can schedule the class in a more proper manner, so that everyone can attend, no matter what.

Ill try my best to accommodate everyone so we will be a great theatre company and we will have fun learning. This mean I need everyone to cooperate with me fully. I’m not asking much, it's for u all in the end. My work is to help you to fulfill your dreams. So let's make this happen.

P.s: guys, harap maklum k. we need to get more serious next term onwards. No funny business. Productions are creeping near. We need to prove to call ourselves a theatre company. So far so good. But we must get better! This means be punctual, have initiative and soul to the sessions, listen and follow, input and output. And pls for heaven's sake. pls start writing in the blog again. we need to start getting ideas to write for our productions. I bet everyone wants to perform in something they all like doing or have some creative contribution in, right? So pls, start pouring ideas as much as u can in our Ya’s blog. People are watching us. Investors, interested parties, aspiring writers, actors and directors, the youth out there....etc. we want them to know that VTC is gonna be visionary something great. Not another random theatre co. so if they like what we do and how we do it, we might get back up. No love + no money = no company. Ok? Sorry to rant so much. But I believe we need to know this clearly to function.

I love you guys, don't let us down. Esp. square. He might not be here, but his heart beats in Sspace…

Yours to trust,

Idora.

FINAL EVALUATION TERM 1 AND THE PROGRAM AGENDA...PLS UPHOLD!

Hello everyone,

Greetings after being cryogenically frozen for 2 weeks! As literal as it is for me, I assume everyone is prepared for a glowing session of FINAL EVALUATION OF TERM 1 this coming Saturday.

This week’s session will be:

FINAL EVALUATION TERM 1
Saturday 26th February ‘05
Sspace, Desa Petaling
4.00pm
(Please come at 3 – 3.30pm to prepare yourselves. REY IS COMING!!!!)

This time, we’ve arrange a suitable time so all of us will be ON TIME (!?) without the problems of after work schedules, jams and etc. if we come on time we can leave on time. So let’s be prompted okay?

Remember the victor’s notes I stress you all to keep and file it up? Well, this is when it’s very useful. Now is the time for you to look back and study what you have done so far. For this is the moments to proves yourselves! So don't waste it.

I am sure you all got the questions I posted on the blogged and emailed you by now. if you didn’t please look at the blog again at this site (http://www.victoriantheatre.com/blogger/youth.arm/2005/02/this-week-is-field-trip-and-evaluation.html) . And the pictures are at this site (http://www.facelink.com/default.asp?p=7070&MemberID=41723089) choose evaluation pics.

Now since we got that out of the way. Next in question is timing. Since the last evaluation some of us took some time with our performances, it was unfair to the other esp when rey had to leave. He is a very and I mean VERY particular person when time is concerned. So this time Vic has set time limits for each of you, group and individual. Again, here are the groups and their timing:

Individual: 4-6 mins

Group: 6 -8 mins

The groups are as follows:

Pair 1: Azmir & Arif

Pair 2: Teresa & Azhar

So to make things runs smoothly, I have set an agenda here. Please read and follow strictly:

Saturday 26th feb ‘05

3 - 3.30pm Arrival of participants and Artistic Director

4.00pm Arrival of Rey Buono
Briefing by Victor

4.15pm Group evaluation commences: Pair 1

4.25pm Pair 2

4.35pm Comments by Rey

4.45pm Quick break

4.50pm Individual evaluation commences with Rey’s comments after each performance:

1) Azmir

5.00pm 2) Arif

5.10pm 3) Teresa

5.20pm 4) Azhar

5.30pm Wrap!

5.40pm Victor’s comments
(and if u guys in the mood, let’s celebrate!)

so let’s keep this evaluation 1 hour and 30 mins okay?

Now my last words are: be creative guys. You’re doing a show. So become apart of the act. Meaning, do whatever it is necessary: music, make up, costume, lights. Whatever it is. We’ve done it all right? We even had a show right? So let’s give rey the est show we have ever done! Good luck to all of you. Do your best. If you are reading all this and being here this far, I'm proud of you already!

All the best and break a leg!

Are you enjoys?

Hello children.

Apa khabar semua? Are you all enjoys? I hope everything is going just spectacularly there and you guys are still drinking and getting wasted - just like the good ol' days, eh? Sorry I have not been in touch with any of you. I guess I have been a little caught up in living this new life now. But I should be more or less settled down now (read: I have a computer) and should be more connected to the world like I used to be in KL.

How are the sessions going? I bet you guys have jumped leaps and bounds and are practically ready to roll for the final trimester right? Gosh, it seems like yesterday you guys just started.
How is everybody feeling?

Well I am feeling just great. Although I am completely broke, I am rich with experience. Yes, yes I know that's such a corny cliche but it's true. I am just having the time of my life now. My classes are just phenomenal and my classmates are just, well, so talented! I could enlighten you with examples but you're just gonna have to take my word for it, for now.

Well, I just wanted to drop a line to check up you flers. Be nice, explore and stay sane.

U GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ill miss u...

hello everyone,

it's 1.44am and im taking abreak from packing. have lots to do before even getting excited even. yeesh. it's becoming more of a chore than taking a break really. my 10 days there is pretty packed with 'activities' and shit. i dont think i have time to even go and look at the sights there. nevertheless, im not gonna complain and enjoy the ride.

funny, i do feel reluctant to leave though. feel bad that sums will have to take over my absence and run the show for you all. and square gave me thousands to do and cant stop worrying somehow. ppor them. having exams and problems to solve besides trying to build an empire...hehehe. i suddently feel like i havent done enough. i had a lot on my mind, and with empty pockets, it doesnt help. i dont anything is ever enough huh? yea i guess what's the depressing bit.

the show we all take part of was great. although i believe i couldve done better if i prepared earlier and if i actually had sleep! sigh....at the rate i go ill die young. but you guys were great. everyone voted lucy to be the best sketch ever. azmir and theresa matsalleh celups wery farneee hahahaha you guy's expressions were the best. pls thank jim for the fan. great addition. without it wont be as lawa. arif is seriously farnee. good gong-ist. hehehe and azhar my god... my best echo ever.... victor erhuu in da house ahahahhaha. we'll definitely do this again. U GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!hehehe long live lucy!! woo hoo!! (wise words of michael....wise indeed) thanky ou all of you who took part and kudos and many gracious thanks to sums for being our last minute life saver (i bet she got in trouble after the show...sorry sums. didnt mean it to happen) however, she is an angel she is. life saver is such an understatement. and thank you michael for coming and gracing the stage with you in a coat and tie. hehehe...not to mention a tan that comes along with it. everyone was praising u all. im so proud of you. very very proud!

your humbly,
id.

a note of corrections and some words from the hearts...

Hello everyone,

I apologize for my mistake earlier reporting that evaluation was next week. I forgot it's the Chinese New Year weekend. Bet u guys are doing something real special. Not to wreck it or anything.....

Anyway, the good news it's not on next week Saturday (12/2/05) ...yayyy!

The bad news is it's on the week after that which is on Saturday (19/2/05)...... wawawawarrrgghhh... (Kononnyer 'let down' sound effect')
Same time (4.30 – 7.30pm…so come at 4pm!!!) same place (Sspace-lah!)

well look on the bright side, it’s not so bad news after all…now we have ample time to give what victor demands from us….the best we can ever do….more than we imagine.

I would like to request this time:

1) Please SHOW UP…David, you haven’t been with us awhile…Paik Yin please attend the evaluation and ‘re-introduce yourself coz we forgot how u look like’! And alia, we need you very much. And this time, please no excuses. And don't shut us down; we still haven’t covered our losses with Ollie and najee quitting us. Not to mention the everlasting grief we go through missing them in our hearts.

2) again as always, WEAR SOMETHING COMFORTABLE…I don't mean pajamas or your birthday suit, but your wear and tear clothing (or much better, if you have set aside costume, Vic will be very impressed!) unless what u wear has a significance towards the concept of your pieces. Or else, I bet u you will be wearing your birthday suit!!

3) Please APPLY EVERYTHING Vic has taught all of us. Don't let him down. I know it’s his job, but there’s more than being a teacher than to teach, but to see you grow and blossom into whatever you should become. So, ANSWER THE BRIEF!

4) Please BE PUNCTUAL. In term of showing up, be early. Early than requested to in the announcements every week. We might be getting outsiders to see. And we don't want to give the impression that we main2 with the sessions. I’m not asking u to marry the Ya’s but channel your effort and passion and dedicate your soul into it. In addition, please keep your pieces timed according to the brief requests. Don’t be like last evaluation till Rey has to run out on us early. It is unfair to the rest of the team. Don't be selfish. Play like a team!

5) Please PREPARE EARLY. As in don't do it the night before or even 5 days before. You have 2 weeks for heaven sakes. Don't take it for granted. Take advantage of the time opportunity and check your ideas with Victor so u won’t tangent away from the brief. Keep doping this till you get the best outta yourselves. Surprise yourselves. Push yourselves to the limit. And if you don't get him, don't despair, keep on trying. Call him, sms him, camp in front of his house, stalk him, bug him. If he still doesn’t reply, then tell me… ill kill him! We pay him for you to torture him, not only him torturing you…vice versa...

6) From now on I’m making this COMPULSORY to (I) WRITE LETTER OF ABSENCE stating when you didn’t come and why you couldn’t come. Do this BEFORE the date of your absence. Please mail to me and cc to square, victor and sums. And (ii) CALL BEFORE we start is you are gonna be LATE or/and you are NOT COMING at all. Whatever it is. Don't tell me you cannot call. Phone beribu ader around you. If you are absent, with no reasons, I will have to answer for you. I don't want to do that anymore. I’m not gonna lie or cover for anything. Coz I’m bad at it really. Plus, I can’t keep track where are all of you at the same time when your missing or late for class during class. I’m not your GPS (Global Positioning System) and cannot keep calling you and hear your ringing tones unanswered, sms unsmsed back, make acquaintances with your voice mail lady who announces that you are not available right now (she and I are best friends…she knows me by name…hmmm… probably treat for coffee for doing such a committed job)

So there, I have said my peace. Let’s grow up and be adult about this, so we wouldn’t be treated like children.

I would also like to take this chance to announce my leave to Berlin on the 10th of February 2005 to Berlin to screen my short film alongside attending valuable courses which would benefit both screen and stage. My flight is that night. I will be going alone, unless you guys wanna send me off, but sokay, not expecting anything that would trouble you. Maybe just a prayer that I will be alright throughout my journey and my stay there will be safe and assured. I’m scared. Never traveled alone…to foreign country that speaks German! But it is an honor to go and being sponsored by Finas and Berlinale (that’s the festival) to be there physically. It’s snowy I hope.

Unfortunately, I will survive there with bread and soup so I can’t buy everyone Belgian (or Berlin!) Chocolates (sorry sums...) but I will bring the thoughts of you guys with me so I won’t feel lonely and sad away from home. I love you guys. I really do. Maybe I don't look it, or say it, but believe me, the Ya’s is this sad girl’s reason to wake up in the morning. I hope you guys can forgive my uncouth behavior and my laser mouth. I’m honest and outspoken it’s true, but I never intended to hurt anyone. And if I did, I’m truly very sorry.

I wish you guys all the best for your evaluation. I won’t be back till the night of the 19th or morning 20th I’m not sure. But I hope to see guys again, happy and bright, like the sun in my heart. And no matter what anyone says you are a STAR… we are the brightest stars when everyone looks up to the cloudy sky…..

And yes, I’m sober…

From a piece of you,

Dora.

YA ENSEMBLE EVALUATION

Introduction

You all are required to prepare 2 pieces. The object of these 2 exercises is for you to demonstrate a clear and comprehensive understanding and the APPLICATION OF ALL THE SUBJECTS/ LEARNING POINTS WE LEARNT in the past semester.

Learning Points:

a) Script writing
b) Timing / pacing of script & acting
c) Presence – in acting, vocals & movement
d) Line enunciation & projection
e) Vocal expression – intonation or singing
f) Movement / dance expression – all the technical elements/ influences / character framing
g) Overall characterization – impersonation / personifying / role study / character elaboration / internal & external influences of the role

Exercise: Individual Exercise (monologue)

Topic: Me and/versus the local Arts and Culture

This topic is a mixture of 2 subjects – yourself and the Malaysian arts and culture. The stand or approach you take can be as (1) a part of the local arts and culture or (2) opposing and criticizing the local arts and culture. Please provide reasons substantiating your stand. Construct a script base on the point mentioned. It can be a of personal experience, your ideal situation, your dream role of playing, your most painful moment… as long as it is a situation you are most familiar with.

With all the above a-g points, for this first exercise, you are required to write a script and perform it while demonstrating the above-mentioned leaning points
Note:

1) Props: Optional. If needed, make one of the prop the key prop or a novelty item which your story evolves around or a particular prop that will enhance your story / performance. Remember, props should not distract your audience or shadow your show.

2) Setting – location & date: It is compulsory that this exercise is set in a Malaysian environment. It can be in the city or kampong as long as it is in Malaysia. You also have to mention the location or refer to some sort of a local geographical landmark in your script. On the other hand, it can be somewhere else, but the story must refer back / ties in to Malaysia. For example:

a) A poor 58 year old woman who lost her family in a bomb attack in Paris 30 years ago and now works as a tea lady in the Malaysian embassy in France
b) A rich royalty Malaysian VIP went to Nepal, had a tragic accident then lost her identity.
c) A kampong boy living in Moscow as a gigolo to a rich Russian KGB female detective.
Be creative. Explore… as long as it is appropriate.

Also the date must be communicated somewhere in the monologue too. However please make your statement subtle. On the other hand, you don’t have to even mention it boldly. This is just so the audience would know the setting of your piece.

3) Script/ performance: It must be an original piece. No rip-offs from movies. Remember to include all the point above mentioned (a-g) that we have learnt in this semester.

4) No of actor(s): one

5) Language: You can use a mix of other languages used in Malaysia like Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Arabic, Kadazan, Minang etc. You also can explore one or many other local sub dialects that are appropriate to the location of the script. For example, say your script is about

The English doctor who was sent to search for a miracle skin infection remedy that plagued the under-nourished locals during the Japanese invasion in 1942.This life-saving remedy comes from a particular ‘Bunga Kepak Puteri Wan Kembang’ flower that only grows in the jungle near in Pasir Putih Kelantan. There, the doctor then falls in love with a local kelantanese and tries hard to fit in…

In this script you can use a mix of the Kelantanese accent in your script. It would be interesting. However still keep your main language to English.

6) Story / topic: as mentioned above. With all the above, it is best to keep your story in a Malaysian context. And as mentioned, something personal or familiar to you.

7) Lighting: Compulsory. You are required to set / design or bring your own lightings for this exercise to enhance your performance. It need not be a dark scene always.

8) Music: Compulsory. It need not be a Malay song, patriotic song etc. Just any piece of music that will enhance your performance either directly or indirectly. You can play an instrument if needed or sing to a minus one.

9) Title: Must prepare an appropriate title for your piece and very brief synopsis.

10) Genre: Freestyle. You can mix it into a docu-drama, dance-drama, Horror-comedy etc.

11) Length / duration: keep the performance length between 4 to 6 mins only!

12) Written submission: You are required to submit your script (preferably printed) before your performance. Include your name, script title, genre, and a brief synopsis.

]

Exercise 2: Group Work

Members were divided into groups last week. This is basically a translation exercise as we did before. However you are required to perform with 3 actors.

Connect these these pictures in any order. Translates them into text (translate all 3 pictures). Then, perform the translated text as a group of 3s.

Attached below are 4 pictures. Choose one of these pictures. Your chosen picture will be your guide in terms of script direction, genre, tone and manner of script/ acting/ movement. Your story must be about the picture or as though the picture is a clip taken from a stage play or movie. Translate the chosen picture into a written text (poem, lyrics, story or script). Then translate your written text into an acting piece. Remember, your performance should demonstrate a clear understanding of the semester learnings (the learning points mentioned in the introduction)

As a summary:

3 PICTURES
TEXT
PERFORMANCE

Note:

1) Props: optional.

2) Setting – location & date: It is compulsory that this exercise is set in a Malaysian environment. It can be in the city or kampong as long as it is in Malaysia. 7) Story / topic : Freestyle. With all the above, it is best to keep your story in a Malaysian context. Make it something personal, your area of expertise or familiar with. Even if the picture does not convey a Malaysian setting, adapt your script to a local setting.

8) Lighting: Compulsory. You are required to set / design or bring your own lightings for this exercise to enhance your performance. It need not be a dark scene always.

9) Music: Compulsory. It can be any piece of music that will enhance your group’s performance either directly or indirectly. You can play an instrument if needed or sing to a minus one.

10) Title: Must prepare an appropriate title for your piece and very brief synopsis. Apart form that, title your chosen picture and explain what you perceive from the picture briefly that leads you to your script..

11) Genre: Freestyle. Must define your genre (together when you introduce your synopsis with the title). You can mix it into a dock-drama, dance-drama, Horror-comedy etc.

12) Length / duration: keep the performance length between 5 to 6 mins.

13) Written submission: You are required to submit your script (preferably printed) before your performance. Include your name, script title, genre, and a brief synopsis and state your chosen picture. Also include the actors’ names.

The pictures:

Picture A:

Picture B:

Picture C:

REMEMBER:

A) CHALLENGE YOURSELF , DON’T TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT
B) THINK CRITICALLY / CREATIVELY / EXPLORE POSSIBLITIES / OPEN YOUR MIND
C) CLEAN UP YOUR PERFORMANCE / MAKE IT BOLD / CLEAR
D) MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL & INTERESTING - VISUALLY, WELL ART DIRECTED. TEXT WISE, DEEP, MEANINGFUL AND SUBSTANTIATED WITH ALL THE LEARNING POINTS PACKED IN.
E) PREPARE WELL AHEAD, DON’T WRITE THE SCRIPT BEFORE CLASS!

Above all have fun.
