But if you dont perform at your best, we wont know where you are lacking and i we cant help you.

So move in to the MAX gear ppl.

Attached is the homework you are required to research, script and perform.

the attachment reads:

YA ENSEMBLE HOMEWORK
TO PRESENT ON Sat 30/1/05

Introduction

You all are required to prepare 2 pieces. The object of these 2 exercises is for you to demonstrate a clear and comprehensive understanding and the APPLICATION OF ALL THE SUBJECTS/ LEARNING POINTS WE LEARNT in the past semester.

Learning Points:

a) Script writing
b) Timing / pacing of script & acting
c) Presence - in acting, vocals & movement
d) Line enunciation & projection
e) Vocal expression - intonation or singing
f) Movement / dance expression - all the technical elements/ influences / character framing
g) Overall characterization - impersonation / personifying / role study / character elaboration / internal & external influences of the role

Exercise 1: Free style

With all the above a-g points, for this first exercise, you are required to write a script and perform it while demonstrating the above-mentioned leaning points
Note:

1) Props: With this exercise, you are required to bring / work with one or a few prop. Make one of the prop the key prop or a novelty item which your story evolves around or a particular prop that will enhance your story / performance. Remember, props should not distract your audience or shadow your show.

2) Setting - location & date: It is compulsory that this exercise is set in a Malaysian environment. It can be in the city or kampong as long as it is in Malaysia. You also have to mention the location or refer to some sort of a local geographical landmark in your script. On the other hand, it can be somewhere else, but the story must refer back / ties in to Malaysia. For example:

a) A poor 58 year old woman who lost her family in a bomb attack in Paris 30 years ago and now works as a tea lady in the Malaysian embassy in France
b) A rich royalty Malaysian VIP went to Nepal, had a tragic accident then lost her identity.
c) A kampong boy living in Moscow as a gigolo to a rich Russian KGB female detective.
Be creative. Explore… as long as it is appropriate.

Also the date must be mentioned somewhere in the script too. However please make your statement subtle. On the other hand, you don't have to even mention it boldly. This is just so the audience would know the setting of your piece.

3) Script/ performance: It must be an original piece. No rip-offs from movies. Remember to include all the point above mentioned (a-g) that we have learnt in this semester.

4) No of actor(s): Free. Individual to 4-person group work. You can choose.

5) Language: You can use a mix of other languages used in Malaysia like Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Arabic, Kadazan, Minang etc. You also can explore one or many other local sub dialects that are appropriate to the location of the script. For example, say your script is about

The English doctor who was sent to search for a miracle skin infection remedy that plagued the under-nourished locals during the Japanese invasion in 1942.This life-saving remedy comes from a particular 'Bunga Kepak Puteri Wan Kembang' flower that only grows in the jungle near in Pasir Putih Kelantan. There, the doctor then falls in love with a local kelantanese and tries hard to fit in…

In this script you can use a mix of the Kelantanese accent in your script. It would be interesting. However still keep your main language to English.

6) Story / topic: Freestyle. With all the above, it is best to keep your story in a Malaysian context. And as mentioned, something personal or familiar to you.

7) Lighting: you are free to set / design or bring your own lightings for this exercise to enhance your performance.

8) Music: you are free to bring your own minus-one or background music or play any musical instruments if needed.

9) Title: Must prepare an appropriate title for your piece and very brief synopsis.

10) Genre: Freestyle. You can mix it into a docu-drama, dance-drama, Horror-comedy etc.

11) Length / duration: keep the performance length between 5 to 8 mins

12) Written submission: You are required to submit your script (preferably printed) before your performance. Include your name, script title, genre, and a brief synopsis.

]

Exercise 2: Translation

Attached below are 4 pictures. Choose one of these pictures. Your chosen picture will be your guide in terms of script direction, genre, tone and manner of script/ acting/ movement. Your story must be about the picture or as though the picture is a clip taken from a stage play or movie. Translate the chosen picture into a written text (poem, lyrics, story or script). Then translate your written text into an acting piece. Remember, your performance should demonstrate a clear understanding of the semester learnings (the learning points mentioned in the introduction)

As a summary:

Note:

1) Props: optional.

For example:

c) A kampong boy living in Moscow as a gigolo to a rich Russian KGB female detective.
Be creative. Explore… as long as it is appropriate.

4) Script/ performance: It must be an original piece. No rip-offs, no re-makes from movies. Remember to include all the learning points above mentioned.

5) No of actor(s): Free. Individual to 4-person group work. You can choose.

6) Language: You can use a mix of other languages used in Malaysia like Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Arabic, Kadazan, Minang etc. You also can explore one or many other local sub dialects that are appropriate to the script.

7) Story / topic : Freestyle. With all the above, it is best to keep your story in a Malaysian context. Make it something personal, your area of expertise or familiar with. Even if the picture does not convey a Malaysian setting, adapt your script to a local setting.

8) Lighting: (optional) you are free to set / design or bring your own lightings for this exercise to enhance your performance.

9) Music: (optional) you are free to bring your own minus one or background music or play any musical instruments if needed.

10) Title: Must prepare an appropriate title for your piece and very brief synopsis. Apart form that, title your chosen picture and explain what you perceive from the picture briefly that leads you to your script.

11) Genre: Freestyle. Must define your genre (together when you introduce your synopsis with the title). You can mix it into a dock-drama, dance-drama, Horror-comedy etc.

12) Length / duration: keep the performance length between 5 to 8 mines

13) Written submission: You are required to submit your script (preferably printed) before your performance. Include your name, script title, genre, and a brief synopsis and state your chosen picture.

Had me cracked!

sometimes... we've open ourselves so much that it cracks and found that long curvy blood line inside you. You can never heal that again. Scrub it yes, whatever it takes to erase that line, thus to ease your feeling. Well... I could say, we can close our eyes to facts, but not to memories...

ode to a blind one

i feel like a blind man waiting to see the sunset. before you know it, the sun has set already. but i am still waiting for it. all i felt was a cooling kind of warmth that isnt there. the brightest glare that i cannot stare. with only false hope that keep this heart beating. hope that one day i will be able to see again... with nothing else but my own eyes. and as i see the sun in its goldenest red, i will see you, so beautiful that inspires the sun to shine the way it is. melancholy speaks no words to me. neither does frailty and despair. only a quiet silence that i constitute as hope. a reason so wrong that feels so right.

confused is such undermining the abilities of my mind. i believe i am able to comprehend many things without writ, read and count. the energy flows into my like cold water in a refreshing day. quenching my thirst as it does. but why cant my heart experience the same? dont you know my heart thirst for love as well? from who you ask? i dont know
something? smoeone? somehow? it should belong to me as well. everyone has it...at least a bit of it. why dont i have it tingly like the rest. i live for the feeling of my heart racing, my breath running out and my body floating. better than a drug. no drug can take you that way. the smell of car scent still haunts me. and the taste, your taste of salty payau salt as so. yes! quenches my thirst. fil the emptiness that was missing. but why suc happiness is temporary? WHY DOES EVERYTHING GOOD SEEMS TEMPORARY?!?!

are you judging me? or are you just watching my like a lame tv series that drives along the lines of pain and parody.. and never ends?

why me?

Reminder

Dear YA's,

For those of you who have not paid up the admin fee of RM 50, pls do so before the end of the month. You know who you are.

Thanks,

Your Reference Guide For Weekend Fun

ECSTASY

  • How you think you behave: Like the beautiful, caring, wonderful person you really are.
  • How you actually behave: Like the creepy kid at school who always sucked up to the teacher. Those revolting sweaty hugs you inflict upon anyone you meet are disgusting.
  • Likelihood of getting laid: 30%. Sex is not important. It's all about the "vibe."
  • How you feel in the morning: Like you should have gone for the sex.
  • Embarrassment rating: 6/10 Ecstasy makes you say nice things to people that you don't like. This can be very embarrassing, particularly if people believe what you say. Be careful who you give your phone number to. They just might call.

MARIJUANA

  • How you think you behave: You're not sure, but you think people could be laughing at you.
  • How you actually behave: Like someone just hit you over the head with an 800kg fridge freezer combination.
  • Likelihood of getting laid: 60%. If you spend enough time on the couch, anything can happen.
  • How you feel in the morning: Like another joint. And the rest of that pizza.
  • Embarrassment rating: 1/10. You are moving so slowly that it's almost impossible to do anything stupid.

ALCOHOL

  • How you think you behave: Like the life of the party. You are sexy, funny and everybody likes you.
  • How you actually behave: Like the death of the party. Your behaviour gets progressively worse as you tell more and more crass jokes, insult the bartender, spill your drink and make a pass at your best friend's date.
  • Likelihood of getting laid: 90%. Your sexual standards drop dramatically with each consecutive drink. If surrounded by others whose standards are also lowered, then your chances are pretty good.
  • How you feel in the morning: Who did I insult? Where is my car? Why did I sleep with someone from the office? I've never felt this bad before. This is absolutely the last time.
  • Embarrassment rating: 11/10. Not only are you stupid, you are sloppy. Everyone recognizes this, except you.

COCAINE

  • How you think you behave: You are smart, irresistible and want to "do lunch" with everyone.
  • How you actually behave: Like an annoying know-it-all who would sell his soul for the next line of blow.
  • Likelihood of getting laid: 80% It may be a Jedi Mind Trick, but when you sincerely believe you are so irresistible, some clueless and insecure type may actually fall for it
  • How you feel in the morning: Like the apeman.
  • Embarrassment rating: 0/10 if there's more coke in the drawer. 9/10 if there isn't.

ACID or SHROOMS

  • How you think you behave: You are not behaving, but the world around you is putting on a pretty good show.
  • How you actually behave: In reality, it is you putting on the show. The rest of the world is behaving the same as ever.
  • Likelihood of getting laid: 20% Even if you actually manage to get through the process of selecting a mate, removing your clothes and choosing a sexual position, you will then have to deal with the challenge of your partner changing into a furry animal/the devil/your mother.
  • How you feel in the morning: Either you are climbing the wall swishing that God would put an end to your suffering, or you finally understand Huxley's "The Doors of Perception."
  • Embarrassment rating: 0/10 You either sat on the couch and laughed at the TV all night, even if it was turned off. Or you climbed onto a building, tried to fly and died.

week 11...pls read

Ey papis and mamis,

This is session number 11 of term 1. This week’s session will be:

Movement 3
Saturday 16th January ‘05
Sspace, Desa Petaling
3.00pm – 7.30pm
(Please come at 2.30pm to do warm ups)

1) Please listen to the song I’ve attached here. We’ll be dancing this in class. Do think about the role you will be playing.

2) According to victor, tight clothing is a must. As in tight tops lah. So yes. I stress on this (unfortunately). Wear tight tops. Don’t forget o wear something comfortable like tracksuits (NO jeans or anything that restrict movements) and what nots. (He’s serious about the topless or/and bottomless thingy. He’ll do it ill tell you. Beware.)

If you will come in late or not at all, please call me before hand. Let’s be respectful of other okay. Don't take them for granted. I can’t read minds yea? And if you have any problems of homework or anything I typed above, call me as well so I could arrange something. Use me for heaven sakes. That’s what I’m here for.

See you in Sspace on time…

p.s: I stress this again: please prepare yourself a file and papers that you can keep the notes victors passes to you or take notes as he explain. This will keep us organize and shows that we’re serious about what we’re doing. Thanks.

pps: the emails some didnt come thru so those with hotmail acc or work acc.. pls get like a yahoo mail or something? pls gimme the new addresses. or call me so i can pass it to you online. or come early on saturday so you can hear it beforehand...

sorry but im doing the best i can to satisfy everyone.

hey y'all..

How was the long weekend? a lot has happened since xmas... if any of you had lost anyone in the recent tragedy i am sorry. i had lost my distance relative... ;-(

anyway , cut to the chase...

1) Next practise time ( 16/1/05) Saturday - class will start earlier from 3.00pm to 7.30. This is to catch up what we have missed due to last week's poor attendance. There were many things we could get into like group sessions because of this. And because of this too, all those who came could not learn so much.. but they had fun performing their prepared homework.

2) Home work - I dont know if some of you did prepare or not but your absence will not excuse your from performing the homework!.... so to those who didnt come for last Sat class pls be on time . Your session will start first. If you missed class due to acceptable reasons.... well.... youre still not getting away from this one.. heheh

Actually i dont want to sound like a slave driver .. because its not slavery work.. its actually fun. You guys can ask those whio attended the last class. We had good laugh, good insights and good look into our friends 'other sides' ( like some ppl can be a realllll tiger arrhhhh!). If any of you are still unclear or stuck , please please mail me or better yet sms me for help. Im here for u...... ok.. that didnt come out right.. see !!! now i sound off a cheap boy band lyrics!!

3) Impressed - To those who came prepared - smilling nods for u. To those who came prepared with well planned creative pieces - our claps go to you. Here i have to give credit when its due... some of us who i didnt think would 'move' as well, suprised me. u know who u r. It pleases me to see u both are thinking and feeling whatever you are doing. Syabas!!! Of course the best actor award goes to...(drm roll)..... ARIFF... also with best make up and best use of props award!!! (WWWWRRAAAAHHHHH!!!!!). We see, we feel, we know when effort is put in. Lets all do the same ok :-) coz the rest of u ARE equally brilliant too.

4) Next week's lesson - i think we have done well on expressions and translation from text, lyrics, music, story to movement. Next week lets move into more exciting terrritory.. lets get physical!! yes lets get down and dance!!!! well.. we ccant learn all the technique in a session but well be doing 2 opposite styles ( me and my opposites again!!) of socio-culture character expressions in dance - (1) the high street, busy metropolitan, city folk lifestyle , and (2) the raw, community concious, tribal african village lifestyle...scared yet??? hehe .. dont be...basically well just be doing the Vogue vs. African dance thingie... Idora will email you a sample of the 2 songs on MP3 (cut down to 1 min to reduce the file size) so you can, at least, get an idea on our upcoming lesson. pls download and listen it.

So were gonna have to do half hour of theory study with notes then move into practical stuff. There gonna be a lot to do next class. Were also be doing facial _expression, posture and techincal finishing in various genre - modern, contemporary, ballet, asian, funk, breakdance, latin etc.. So... come and discover your moves and grooves ... (ok now i sound off a beaten down dance school ad)... ok so u get my drift..

with all said and ..... typed,

REMEMBER!!!!

* come on time
* wear movable costume - NO JEANS!!! i still see 1 or 2 of you still wearing JEANS. NO shirts too. This is This is NOT some after office social club!! Try to wear tight fitting tops ( like singlet or tight tshirt) so we can see your posture. PPL IM DEAD SERIOUS ABT THIS. if you dont come in proper clothings, im gonna force u to dance topless! (and bottomless if u wear jeans)
* prepare yourselves - get enuf sleep. Eat lunch. Theres gonna be a lot of fun physical work

till then

pondering...& wandering...

oh, yes...(or maybe, OH NO!) another malay poem...this was written when i was in form 5 (tht long?!!) since i've got nothing better 2 do in class during tht particular time, apart frm reading novels & comics in secrecy :P

Metamorfosis

Kadangkala manusia itu sendiri bertanya...
Mengapakah ia dilahirkan ke dunia
tujuannya menjalani kehidupan dan penghidupan...
Namun ada kalanya ia sendiri alpa
lalu tidak mengenal dirinya siapa
Hanyut dalam kalut kemelut kota
Lemas dalam noda dan dosa
Ia tersedar lalu menangis
Tapi ia telah terlewat
Ia berlalu sebagai manusia leka
Pergi meninggalkan sisa yang tiada ertinya
melangkah dalam keberatan dan kesangsian
Hinggalah ia mempelajari sesuatu yang baru
tapi...sampai bilakah ia harus terus berpura-pura
Hakikatnya jelas tiada selindung mahupun mendung
Adakah ia benar-benar sedar bahwasanya ia hidup itu
hanya sementara atau untuk berbakti?
Ia terus berfikir lalu bermusafir
Mencari harga diri yang telah hilang
Memahami kehidupan serba fana ini
Ia memerhati lumrah alam ini
Duduk sendiri termenung lagi
ia mendalami maksud hati yang sepi...

Please. Take A Moment

Please. Take a moment.

For the Tsunami survivors - especially Malaysians and friends in Acheh.

HADAPI SAJA

"relakan yang terjadi
takkan kembali
ia sudah miliknya
bukan milik kita lagi

tak perlu menangis tak perlu bersedih
tak perlu tak perlu sedu sedan itu

hadapi saja

pasrah pada ilahi
hanya itu yang kita bisa
ambil hikmahnya
ambil indahnya

cobalah bernyanyi cobalah menari
cobalah cobalah mulai detik ini

hadapi saja

hilang memang hilang
wajahnya terus terbayang
berjumpa di mimpi
kau ajak aku untuk menari bernyanyi
bersama bidadari malaikat dan
penghuni syurga"

I wish I could do more for you all...

I wish WE could do something for them... in our own creative way.
