Malaysian?Apa itu.
Hi hi thoughts seems to flow better early in the morning :P
The first thought that hit me when I found out about this assignment :
What does being a Malaysian means.
Funny how the first thought that pops in my head is
==> Malaysian = 3 main races Chinese, Malay + Indian but that is not true isn't it.
There seem to be a general theme going on about race. So here is my take on the issue of race and being Malaysian.
1. Race
There seems to be a general idea that when we think of being a Malaysian the three main races comes up, Malay, Chinese, Indian. I remembered meeting a Catholic Bidayu who is rather frustrated because people mistakes him for a Malay and dreads Puasa time (well I guess you would know why). Made me wonder about the people in Malaysia who were mix or not part of the 3 main races etc.
So what about a story about a character who is born Malaysia but his parents are Indonesian/Pilipino. He often gets mistaken as a Malay/chinese and he feels that he doesn’t fit in the scheme of things even though Malaysia is the only place he knows.
He studies in Malaysia but grows up in a village/neighbourhood where no one is Malay Chinese or Indian.
He goes on a journey to find out what being a Malaysian is all about.
Meets a Malay and ask him what is being Malaysian about
Malay man shows him nasi lemak?!?...
Meets a Chinese and ask him what is being Malaysian about
Chinese man shows paper hell money (the ones that they burn to the dead) etc
Meets Indian man
Indian man shows him the class system? (er blurring out here)
Meets the other races
the show him what being Malaysian is all about?
Ok I am bad at endings
(Character came about because I read in the papers that there are a vast number of Pilipino and Indonesian kids who are born in Malaysia. Kids were left behind by their parents because their parents were deported and the fact that these kids are born in Malaysia but they aren’t Malaysian but then again neither are they Pilipino/Indonesian...)
Alright excuse me for this rather weird boring post. Back to school mode is getting to me
