Xmas homework (due - 8/1/04)

a word from our artistic director...

hey guys,

just to cap the homework i gave on sat 18/12/04

PIECE 1 : DANCE NARRATION - (TRANSLATION)

* Purpose - To test translation ability from a written piece to movement _expression
* write an original story that is relevant to your life - be sincere!!
* The performance length should be of 3 mins to 5 min max!!!! (any longer will be cut). Its a
good idea to time yourself
* No dialogue, no music , keep props to the minimum
* Be creative, make it interesting, worth our time, avoid the cliches if possible
* Include all the theories you've learnt from the sat class.
* Style, tempo, genre etc is up to you. MAKE SURE IT IS REFINED & CLEAN

PIECE 2 : MUSIC & LYRICS TRANSLATION

* Purpose - To test translation ability from a combination of peotry/lyrics and music written to movement _expression
* pick your favorite song
* perform 3 to 5 min of it . You can choose any part of the song you want to perform
* There must be a considerable amount of message/info/story in lyrics
* It can be a step format but preferably narrative
* Please do NOT translate word-for-step!!!!
* Translate the meaning of the song
* Take a non-cliche angle of the story and express it. For eg.. the song 'I will survive', we all know its abt a woman who was hurt and mistreated by her lover and then gets the courage to tell the lover off and picks herself up to carry on living and loving.... now, it can told in an office set-up like a subordinate telling off the boss. Translate the main MEANING and EMOTION of the song (in this case courage, frustration, strength & hope) and not the exact story in as described in the lyrics. Another intersting angle is - If the song feels feminine, take the masculine side and present it, make sure the finishing is masculine ...or ...take an uninteresting song and make it interesting by replaying it slowly like 'Happy Birthday' and make it sad and emotional as though celebrating a loved one who has passed away. Or move to 'NegaraKu' but take different angle like the victim of 1942 japanese torture... let your juices flow...!!
*
* Include all the theories you've learnt from the sat class.
* Style, tempo, genre etc is up to you but make sure it fits the music and lyrics. MAKE SURE IT IS REFINED & CLEAN
* listen to music/lyrics for ideas. All the secret of creativity and expressions are in the song. Be sensitive and feel it. Open up and absord. also take into account the beat _expression, purcussion used, tempo, flow of melody, harmony, chords, energy, bass, intruments used, culture, tecnology, era.

remember:

- a simple story like 'Washing my car' or a song like ' O Bladi-O blada' can be made very interesting.. its the :

a) structure - how you tell the story
b) angle - viewing the story it from a different perspective / side of of the story
c) finishing - the refined & clean delivery, energy, physical and emotional capabilities

BTW it gonna be at sunway auditorium - a large area - so UTILIZE THE SPACE FULLY!!

If there is any inquiry PLS PLS PLS call me, my number is at the bottom. Dont go and ask your friends. clarify with me. Ill give you ideas to improve your piece.

You are ur best judge. Push yourself emotionally, physically and creatively. do things that you dont normally or think you cant do ... lets see that other side of you. and pls prepare early. dont do last minute work, you have 2 weeks to prepare so i expect some form of depth, details and finishing to this!!

above all, lets have fun!!!
