Force of Habit or Rule?

You are driving in a desert. Suddenly, you come across a red light.

Do you stop?

  • i'd stop from the shock of seeing a red light in the middle of a desert.
    and then i'd move on.

  • I will fall on my knees...

I will stop, but not out of habit -

    1. First, determine where the red light is hanging from - is it from the doorway of a hut/building? In this case, I won't stop - no dough.

If it is from a traffic light - are there the amber and green lights, and is this traffic light at a junction in the desert, and is the view not blocked and one is able to see there is no traffic from other directions converging on this junction?

If one can see and there is traffic, stop.

If there is no traffic, AND no view-cam or traffic cop around, I will still stop. Why? Read (2) below.

    2. I will stop, to examine if it is a mirage. A mirage means I might be hallucinating, and therefore I will check if I am having a fever, thirsty, etc. If it is not a mirage, see (1) above.

    3. Assuming, your question assumes - it is a straight road one is on, there is no junction, the red light is on a traffic light with amber and green light, or even by itself only, and it is showing red with no other car in sight -

I will stop, get out, and fall on my knees.

    Why?

To give thanks - because I would have come across a live Zen question to contemplate.

I shall meditate on this Zen question...

...anyone with an answer to this Zen question?
